Two-By-Four

I suspect everyone has heard the story about the farmer getting a mule’s attention by use of a two by four. I certainly have needed one put to my thick skull. Suzy says when I’m being bull-headed she is going to get it out of the closet.
Anyway, God speaks to us in countless ways. I’ve written about his nudges, or finding God in the smell of honeysuckle or the music of a songbird. He speaks to us in all kinds of ways and yes on occasion he has to use a figurative two-by-four.
I have no doubt that Jesus felt like using a two-by-four with his disciples as they failed to listen to his reminders to “be awake”, be alert, and “be on watch.” Whatever you think of Harper Lee’s new book you have to love the images of “Go Set The Watchman” and “everyone’s watchman is one’s conscience.”
We use the silence of meditation and prayer it takes us to some wonderful places, allows us to hear our watchman, and most importantly keeps God from needing to wield a two-by-four.
