Because It Had Happened

Do not to be sad that it is over, but smile because it had happened.  — Vin Scully

I didn’t hear Vin Scully say the above when he announced his final Dodgers game last Sunday. I heard his words when Jack  Nicklaus quoted Scully during his beautiful eulogy during the funeral service for Arnold Palmer.

If we live for any length of time, we all will suffer major losses, but Vin Scully’s words remind us why loss can be so painful — “because it had happened.”

His words also remind us that so much of life is joyful — a wonderful marriage, a close friendship, a rewarding career, and even all those brief joyous moments beginning when we are very young.

Too many times we dwell on the losses — the end of a sports career, the death of a loved one, a friendship that ends and will never be the same again, or all of those minor losses again beginning when we are very young.

I hope Scully’s words will stay with me for quite a while, and I always remember to not be sad but to “smile because it had happened.”
