Silence As A Conscious Reaction and Decision

Set a watch before my mouth, O Lord, and guard the door of my lips. — Psalm 141:3

Suzy and I were recently invited over to a friend’s for dinner along with several couples. I remember feeling at the end of the evening as if I talked too much that night, and then a few days later ran across the above.
Norvene Vest in No Moment Too Small says that “before we speak, we can choose silence and then look honestly at what the urge to speak is telling us about ourselves.”
One of my New Year’s resolutions every year is to speak less and listen more.
The psalmist and Mrs. Vest’s words are never more important then when we are in conversation with God.
Prayer is never more beneficial than when we are silent, and we listen prayerfully and attentively for the voice of God.
