The Road Ahead

He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”  — Matthew 16:15

On one’s birthday the above is not a bad question to ask oneself.
It’s a day on a long journey when one pauses to look at how far you have come, and then look to the road ahead.
For Jesus he asks his followers to sum up the trip so far, how far had his disciples come. The answers: John the Baptist, Elijah, another prophet, etc. are answers that reflect the road that had been traveled.
Only Peter, is looking forward to the road ahead.
One one’s birthday, it is also wise to answer Jesus’s question directly — “Who’d do I say you are?”
Have I kept him at arm’s length? Will I continue to hold back, or will I plunge in his magic waters?
In this story Jesus give us a hint at the answer he wants. Look to the road ahead.
It’s also a good answer to the question we ask ourselves? “Who do I say I am?” The answer is in the road ahead.
