Decisions About Surgery Can Mirror Life

About every three years, Suzy encourages me to see a knee doctor about having my knees replaced. I’ve had many of my teammates tell me I will know when I need the surgery, “the pain will be so bad you will do anything to rid yourself of the pain.” The doctors are a little more delicate. They say, “when the pain interferes with your lifestyle, it’s time to have the surgery.”

Now I don’t recommend using my fear of further knee surgery as an example of anything, but I will say many of us cling to bad habits, fears, or pain because there is a certain security in the familiar, even pain. “Better the devil we know, than the devil we don’t know.”

It has also been said that “when the pain of remaining the same becomes greater than the pain of changing, we will change.” How often have you stayed in a situation that is no longer working, because the familiar feels safer than the unfamiliar?

I have written about my friend who sought change. He sets a good example for us all. Change is how we move forward. New challenges replace the old painful challenges, much like a new knee or two.
