There Are Many Pathways To God

About this time in Lent, I have second thoughts about my Lenten discipline. Maybe it needs some tweaking, or maybe I should have taken on a Lenten partner, like I did on my sabbatical. I hear how wonderful somebody is doing on their Lenten discipline, or someone has taken on a service obligation that makes mine puny or seem insignificant. The contrary feeling may be that I hear of somebody’s discipline, and I get all self-righteous about how my Lenten discipline. Equally insidious are the ways I compare myself to someone else.

When I get to this point I know to take a deep breath and remind myself that there are as many pathways to God as there are stars in the sky.

Everyone’s Lenten journey is unique. They are all sufficient in God’s eyes, and we are all called and loved by God uniquely and unconditionally.
