Lent As A Spring Cleaning

Some people think of Lent as a spring cleaning, getting the heart, body, and mind ready for another year. I probably have used that analogy myself in previous Pews.

Another way to look at Lent is a time to bring out all the tools we need to serve God and our neighbors. We improve our heart, body, mind, and soul for forty days through prayer, sacrifice, meditation, and service to become the man or woman God meant us to be. However we must be careful not to put those tools back in storage after Lent.

It is easy to pack away all the tools we have used for forty days after the glorious celebration of Easter. My mental attic is full of lenten good intentions that I stored away after Easter. If I am honest with myself the reason being I wasn’t quite ready to embrace the life they called me to lead.

Lent is a season to stretch our limits, and to get comfortable with the uncomfortable. It is a time to prepare for God’s call, because it is coming.
