Let It Die

Have you heard something? Let it die with you. Be brave, it will not make you burst. — Ecclesiasticus 19:10.

Sirach admonishes us not to gossip. Can you imagine in these days of social media  what would happen if we all followed this advice? There are some benefits to social media I have found. We keep track of old friends from high school, can wish them all happy birthday, and at my age learn of one’s death. But there is a lot of gossip and fake news on social media that does a lot of harm. We all need to be more discerning and careful.

Isn’t it interesting that gossip was a problem over 2000 years ago. Don’t you wonder why that is? What is equally as important is that Sirach’s advice given way back then is good advice today — Let it die!
