The Good Shepherd

The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. — John 10:11.

Jesus is talking about himself, but are we called to do the same? The selfish answer is no, but as Russia and the U.S. are making noise about war, we are reminded that time after time we call on young men and women to make the ultimate sacrifice.

I am truly bothered by war, especially when it seems to be about territory more than protecting life. I can understand a father or mother protecting their children from harm, but cheaper oil or arbitrary boundaries hardly seem a shepherd’s job.

Yes, I know Jesus is talking about dying so that we “may have life, and have it abundantly,” but perhaps he is also telling humankind something more.

  1. I don’t think the current environment is only about territory, I think Putin is trying to break or embarrass Europe and NATO. Germany is proving to be a weak sister. Remember they are dependent upon Russian oil – all in the name of climate change. They are decommissioning their last 3 nuclear reactors and become dependent upon coal if they don’t have Russian oil.
