What my father has given me is greater than all else, and no one can snatch it out of my father’s hand. — John 10:29.
One of our basketball players who lived in the athletic dorm had especially large and strong hands, many of my football teammates lost wagers that they could knock a basketball out of his hands. I never saw or heard of it happening.
Now I don’t think basketball was even invented when the above verse was written, nor do I quite understand the passage, but it caused me to wonder what has the father given me that is “greater than all else?”
I spent quite a long time with this exercise, and I bet you will too. The gifts are many, but what is the greatest. For example, was it life or life after I met my wife? Was it life, or was it life after I received a transplant? Can any of us truly say one of our children is a greater gift than another, I can’t? The list goes on and on.
I can’t come up with a good answer to the greatest gift, but I am certainly glad “no one can snatch it out of my father’s hand.” While it’s difficult to pinpoint a single “greatest” gift, perhaps the overarching theme is the relationship with God. This relationship, as described in the passage, is secure and unbreakable. It’s a gift that transcends material possessions, health, and even human relationships. It’s a source of eternal life, peace, and purpose.
Ultimately, the greatest gift may be the ongoing journey of discovering and appreciating the many blessings God has bestowed upon us.
