In the wonderful story of Martha and Mary in the New Testament (one of my favorites), Martha is “worried and distracted by many things,” while “there is need of only one thing” (Luke 10:41-42). This isn’t just an anecdote; it’s an important lesson often overlooked, yet perhaps the most crucial takeaway from their encounter with Jesus. When life gets real, what we truly need above all else is a relationship with God.
Many of us can identify with Martha. We’re constantly juggling details, managing arrangements, and getting caught up in the endless to-do lists of life. In our busyness, we often neglect the very thing that nourishes our souls: taking time to simply sit and listen to God. But it’s this one thing—this focused connection—that we genuinely need.
So, perhaps today, this weekend, or sometime in the next few days, carve out some time to be in God’s presence. Whether you choose to walk and talk with him/her, or sit quietly by a stream and pour out your heart, make that connection. It’s truly what you need.
Great advice! Thank you.
