The Bright Side

One unexpected silver lining of my recent health journey is the beautiful gift of time—time to dive into books and simply let my thoughts wander. To be honest, many of my reading sessions drift into a peaceful nap, but I’ve come to embrace that as a victory! A dear friend of mine used to say that “dreamwork” is the most healing work a person can do. I always joked back, “Well, if that’s the secret, I must be the healthiest person on earth!” There truly is something magical about a good nap.

While the television and social media often try to pull our focus toward everything that’s wrong with the world, I’ve found my heart turning in a much more beautiful direction. Lately, I’ve been overwhelmed by the sheer amount of goodness happening all around us.

This change in perspective started with the incredible nurses and health professionals I met. I know they have their own busy lives—juggling childcare, commutes, and daily stresses—yet they brought nothing but warmth and light into my room. They went above and beyond with a level of grace that was truly inspiring, especially considering I’m a bit of a “challenging” patient! (Let’s just say I wasn’t exactly designed to fit comfortably into hospital beds or imaging machines.)

Since coming home, I’ve made it a point to really see the people working in my community. Most of their jobs might not be “moon-walk” level intensity, but I am constantly struck by their high spirits and their sincere desire to help. There are always exceptions, of course, but the overwhelming rule is kindness. It feels like so many of us are collectively deciding to tune out the “end-of-the-world” noise from the media and instead focus on the life right in front of us. The media might call that a problem, but I think it’s actually the solution.

The truth is, I can’t even walk down my own block without encountering a kind heart or a gentle soul. That says so much about who we are. Perhaps we all deserve to spend a little more time celebrating the goodness and the wonderful people surrounding us. I have a strong feeling that God is doing exactly that.
