What do you do after Easter? Whether you had a totally compliant Lenten season or you “fell off the wagon” once or twice, you rightfully ask: what happens next?
For a small few, a mission has emerged. Through Lenten service, sacrifice, and study, you have developed a clarity of purpose that God is calling you to continue. But for the rest of us, it feels a bit like the Monday after the Final Four—whether your team won or lost, the big event is over, and you’re left wondering what to do with your time.
Hopefully, God offered you a nudge: perhaps you read a passage that still has you thinking, or you spent a day at an assisted living facility and saw a sudden window of opportunity to help. Maybe you started walking for penance and realized you actually want to join a hiking group for joy. If that happened, you are one of the lucky ones. For most of us, however, we simply drift back into the “normal” routine—reaching for a few more cookies or pouring that glass of wine before dinner. Life, it seems, simply goes on.
But in truth, none of us are actually the same.
A seed has been planted. Despite our best efforts to ignore its presence, it has begun to germinate. It will start to grow in a direction we might never have contemplated. God works that way—expertly ignoring our superficial wants to address our truest needs.
The best thing we can do in these coming days and weeks is not to scramble for a new “project,” but simply to remain observant. Be open to the possibilities that arrive unbidden. The season of sacrifice may be over, but the season of becoming has just begun. Keep your heart quiet enough to hear the growth.
