Changing Seasons

Fall finally showed up this week, or at least the summer heat died down a bit. Soon the leaves will turn, and my favorite season will be here in its full glory.

Part of the reason Fall is my favorite time of year has always been the return of football season and the World Series. Today, however, CTE, injuries, and my Razorbacks struggling to stay competitive have taken some of the glow off football. The sports calendar itself feels blurred—the World Series now stretches into November, basketball seems to start earlier each year, and MLS soccer runs alongside them all.

The natural seasons seem to merge as well. My son reports that Dallas is still experiencing 100-degree days, while elsewhere snow is already falling. Hurricanes appear in the Pacific, and we all await the unpredictable shifts in weather patterns that have become a regular part of our life. Even school schedules shift and overlap in ways I don’t recall. Maybe it’s just my age, or maybe the world really is moving at a more jumbled pace.

It seems everything around us is in flux. Seasons blur, sports overlap, and the rhythms we once relied on quietly change. Human plans shift, our strength ebbs and flows, and the very things we counted on to mark time can lose their luster.

Yet in Malachi 3:6, we are reminded: “I the Lord do not change.” The author of Hebrews echoes this truth, writing that “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” When the weather shifts unpredictably and the world feels unsettled, God’s grace remains firmly anchored. His mercy does not depend on the forecast, the news, or the standings—though, contrary to public opinion, I remain convinced He doesn’t root for the Yankees.

As we watch the leaves turn and feel the air grow crisp, let these changes serve as a gentle reminder that while everything in this life shifts, the God who created it stands firm. We can step into this new season not with anxiety over what is changing, but with quiet gratitude for the Love that never will.
