In case you’re wondering the presence of the 1968 SWC and Sugar Bowl Champion Razorback team in Fayetteville inspired the current Razorback football team on to a 51-7 defeat at the hand of the South Carolina Gamecocks. So much for the old inspiring the young. It was not a pretty sight.
Nevertheless, it was a wonderful weekend of storytelling and renewal of friendships from a long time ago, but never far from my heart and the hearts of all the young men who shared four years together, living in the same dorm, eating every meal together, and surviving as a team injuries, pain, sweat, victories and defeat. From personal experience, I know that no matter how far any of us may rise or fall, may succeed or fail, every member of that team has the back of his teammates and is there to pick up a teammate whenever needed. It is a pretty special feeling to know that there has been and always be such a “presence” in one’s life. Our team had and has a special bond that goes beyond understanding.
Such a feeling and bond is very similar to God’s presence. He too has our backs, and he calls us to have the back of all of humankind. We are to give everyone our love and support, and to offer a hand when someone is blindsided or clipped by life. Similar to the way I feel towards my teammates, we must endeavor to not just love our neighbors as ourselves, we should strive to love our neighbors better than we love ourselves. It is the definition of a teammate and of our fellow man.
Now if the Razorbacks could only start playing better.
