Lent

You’ve got to love the fact that Madison avenue hasn’t found a way to commercialize Lent. You can buy a reduced-price mattress on President’s day, but no one has figured out how to make a buck on sacrifice, contemplation, and prayer. There are some things still immune to their creativity.

I read recently that it is time for us all to “put aside childish things” and quit asking what are you giving up for Lent, and instead ask, “Who will I be during Lent?”
Lent is a time to explore in a deep and meaningful way our relationship with God. We use techniques such as fasting, self-examination, prayer and meditation, and if we are open to the experience it can be counter-cultural, provocative, and exciting.
Enjoy the pancakes of Shrove Tuesday and welcome the journey. It’s gonna be one Hell of a ride.
