Christmas morning gives us a glimpse of the world with different eyes. I watch my grandchildren tear into packages only to become more fascinated with the box or ribbon than the gift inside. They are teaching me to see with different eyes.
I’m reminded of a long time ago when Suzy and I bought Hubbell’s Folly and took the kids over to see it the first time. We thought they would be excited to see their new rooms, the kitchen, etc. The house was empty and what fascinated them the most was the house had echoes. Walter and Rebecca with Caroline in tow ran throughout the house shouting, “hello” and waiting for the walls to talk back. I remember like yesterday Walter saying, “Rebecca, Caroline, come on let’s go find some more echoes.” We later asked them what they liked most about the house and the response was unanimous, “The house had echoes. How much fun was that?”
I admire artists so much because they see the world differently, finding beauty where I see only a blur, a brick building, or an empty field.
Christmas is a time where beauty abounds all we have to do is look. Take some time to train one eyes to see beauty in everything. Beauty is an echo of our love of God. Like my children take a few minutes to go find some echoes.
