Jesus stood still and called them, saying, “What do you want me to do for you?” — Matthew 20:32
Have you ever watched a champion surfer? After he fights and struggles to get past the waves, he sits on the board and is perfectly still waiting and watching. He remains at his perfect spot as swell after swell goes by, yet he waits for what he knows will come, if only he can remain patient. He knows the perfect wave when he sees it far off in the horizon, and when it arrives he pounces into action. Every bit of him is prepared to respond to the purpose that brought him to this point.
It is not easy to be perfectly still. Try it, or better yet, try to get a four year old child to do it. Yet, in the stillness of a meditation at sunrise, or the stillness of praying to God, we mirror the surfer. We are patient and have faith that our time will come. We are prepared to act when the message arrives, and to actually take timely action.
Lent is a time to practice stillness and riding the waves of life. Have faith that the message from God will arrive, and he will even provide the board upon which to ride.
