Learning

When you get older and you are ready, your ancestors will show up to guide you. — Joe Coyhis

We kid ourselves when we think we are too old to learn anything new. When I was young most of my real learning experiences involved learning something the hard way. I also thought I was indestructible, which got in the way of my learning. As the saying goes the more I learned, the more I learned I didn’t know. With every realization that I had a lot more to learn, the more teachable I became.  The American Indian saying above is another way of saying — when the student is ready, the teacher appears.
Now that I am older I must overcome the next impediment to learning — believing learning something new won’t do any good. Such a belief is as wrong as when I was young believing I already knew everything and was indestructible. Such a belief keeps me from inviting new teachers into my life.
Every day offers learning moments, come wise ancestors and children I am ready to learn.
Author’s Note: I apologize to my readers for yesterday’s Pew. It could be read as political and not a poor attempt at humor. I am still learning. W.
