There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish. — John 6:9
We all know the story of Jesus feeding the crowd of five thousand with five loaves of bread and two fish, and if you are like me I thought it was all about the miracle. But like so many stories about Jesus there is more to it.
It begins with Jesus asking his disciples where to buy enough bread to feed the crowd even though he knew what he was going to do. Philip tells him the “Six month wages would not buy enough bread for each of them to get a little.” But Andrew says, “There is a boy.” John 6:5-9. We all know what happens.
How do you react when faced with impossible odds? Do you restate the problem pointing out the obvious like Philip, or do you search for a glimmer of hope in something or someone no matter how insignificant?
Life teaches us that often God provides solutions in the most unlikely places, and we need only search for the boy.
