Our Perceptions Are Made Finer

The Miracles of the Church… but upon our perceptions made finer, so that for a moment our eyes can see and our ears hear what is there about us always. — Willa Cather, Death Comes For the Archbishop.

Although Willa Cather is describing the miracles of the church, she could be describing what happens to us when we follow our Lenten discipline — “our perceptions are made finer.”

When we daily communicate with God through prayer, communicate with our soul through meditation, transform our habits through sacrifice, and serve our neighbors we see with new eyes and hear with new ears.

Some think of Lent a duty thrust upon us by the Church, when in reality it is a gift that can become a miracle.
