If You Love, Our Guns Will Wilt

You might quiet the whole world for a second if you pray. And if you love, if you really love, our guns will wilt. — St. John of the Cross.

St. John of the Cross has long been recognized as one of the world’s great mystical poets. In today’s poem he writes about the power of one. I loved listening to Bishop Curry preach last Saturday at the Royal wedding give his message of the power of love. I think St. John would have loved it as well.

But St. John doesn’t stop with the power of love and turning weapons into plowshares, he talks about how we all have enormous capacity in the simple acts of prayer and love. We have the opportunity to quiet the “world for a second.” Imagine that possibility — all humanity stops its bickering, gossip, hatred, back-biting, and vitriol speech for a moment. Imagine just one person loving, real loving, and disarming the world.

St. John tells us not to underestimate the power of one, especially our unique selves. I think we don’t give each one of us enough credit. God is part of each and every one of us. Isn’t it time to unleash his power onto the world?
