Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and protector of our faith. — Hebrews 12:1-2a.
The first verse of Hebrews is packed full of wonderful images. I suspect Luis could do a full week of sermons on this one sentence. Dorothy Sayers wrote a novel titled, Clouds of Witness. In the movie, Chariots of Fire, Eric Liddell delivers a sermon on “running with perseverance.” I could go on and on.
The message of keeping the eye on the prize seems especially appropriate during the last week of Lent. Easter Sunday is but a few days away, may we all focus on the finish line and celebrate the last days of the race to God.
I love this scripture. Perhaps it’s because I grew up in a frenetic family with a Dad committed social justice and equality.
You and Suzy have a wonderful Easter time.
