A True Gift

But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of any works of righteousness that we have done, but according to his mercy. — Titus 3:4.

Titus reminds us that when Jesus came it was not because we deserved a savior, but that his kindness was an act of mercy and true gift from God — The best present any of us could receive.

About this time of year, I wish I had spent more time thinking about the gifts I am giving to my friends and family. Every now and then I hit a home run, or at least a double, but I strike out a lot. My poor batting average is probably a result of my buying into the commercial aspects of gifting. I get convinced that everyone needs the latest gadget or clothing item. I’m thinking with my head and not my heart.

True gifts come without obligation or need for reciprocation. A lesson I need to remind myself.
