To Love

To love another person is to see the face of God. — Victor Hugo, Les Miserables.

I missed this quote when I read the Classic comic book that summarized Hugo’s classic. I heard it the first time I saw the musical, and it has had a lasting impact on me. The sentiment reflects a view that love can reveal the divine in others and the world around us.

I find Hugo’s words to be especially true when I see the face of a child, especially a face of one of my children or grandchild. A child’s smile not only brightens their parents’ faces, but brings light and happiness to his or her surroundings.
