Gentleness Born of Wisdom

Show by your good life that your works are done with gentleness born of wisdom. — James 3:13b.

James’s wisdom tickles my fancy and makes for a great meditation as I stroll through the park. — “Gentleness Born of Wisdom.” If I could have a single prayer it might just be, “God please help me live a good life whose works are with gentleness born of wisdom.” A life well-lived is a symphony of wisdom and gentleness, a harmonious dance between knowledge and kindness. James’s timeless truth resonates deeply with me, serving as a guiding principle for my life.

Gentleness is an attribute that sits well in almost any environment. I am drawn to those who exude gentleness and kindness. We trust those who approach their days with a gentle touch and a kind heart. When you temper gentleness with wisdom you have a winning combination. We should ask how can I cultivate gentleness in my daily life? What wisdom can I draw upon to guide my actions?

A good life, to me, is one marked by compassion, service, and a quiet strength. It’s a life lived in harmony with others and with the world around us. Have you ever experienced a moment where faced with a challenging situation, you drew upon the wisdom and responded with patience and understanding. It was a reminder of the power of gentleness, born from a deep connection to something greater than ourselves.

James takes it a step further. He suggests that our gentleness must be “born” of wisdom. In other words the way we walk and go about our life originates with wisdom. Last night I tossed and turned because I had failed to use wisdom that I had from many moons ago. But God teaches us to be forgiving and gentle with ourselves. This morning I thanked him and asked that I begin again with “works done with gentleness born of wisdom.”
