At War With The Holy Spirit

Stephen’s scathing indictment, “You always resist the Holy Spirit!” (Acts 7:52), echoes through the ages, a timeless condemnation of those who deliberately oppose God’s influence. His words weren’t merely directed at the Sanhedrin; they were a broader condemnation of humanity’s persistent rebellion against the Spirit of God.

Jesus, the ultimate manifestation of God’s love and grace, was sent into a world entrenched in spiritual warfare. His mission was twofold: to confront sin and death and to offer salvation. He sought to soften hardened hearts, renew minds, and reconcile humanity to God. Yet, His message of love and forgiveness was met with resistance and hostility. The Sanhedrin, the religious leaders of the time, rejected his claims and conspired to have him crucified.

Stephen, a martyr for the faith, followed in Jesus’ footsteps. His bold proclamation of the truth infuriated his audience, leading to his brutal stoning. His final words, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them,” exemplify the ultimate act of Christian love and forgiveness.

Today, our society’s war against the Holy Spirit rages on, perhaps more fiercely than ever. We witness it in the rampant immorality, the persecution of the marginalized, and the blatant disregard for human dignity. In the face of such hostility, we must emulate the example of Jesus and Stephen.

We must: Approach others with empathy and understanding, seeking to build bridges rather than burn them. Live out the love of Christ in our words and actions, extending forgiveness to all, regardless of their offense. Intercede for those in authority, seeking to soften their hearts and influence them for good.

This path won’t be easy. It will require sacrifice and unwavering faith. But in a world dominated by greed and power, our choice is clear: to follow God’s message of love and compassion.
