Take Courage, Give Courage

Be strong and let your heart take courage, all you who wait for the Lord. – Psalm 31:24

Today’s verse offers a message of hope and resilience in the face of adversity. However, the current climate demands a deeper understanding and a more active response.

Many describe the days ahead as “Golden Days,” but a more fitting description might be “A Time For Courage.” Fear pervades our communities – fear of job loss, eviction, deportation, imprisonment, and family separation. The specter of injustice looms large, and the very foundations of our society seem to be crumbling.

This “Time For Courage” is not limited to those who have recently immigrated to this country. It extends to all who face the threat of  oppression, including US-born citizens who may find themselves targeted by the new administration.

The challenges we face are multifaceted: the threat of war, the erosion of democratic institutions, the rise of authoritarianism, and the relentless pursuit of material wealth at the expense of human dignity and the natural world. These are indeed dark times, yet within them lies the opportunity for profound transformation.

The psalmist encourages us to find courage in our faith, but courage also is found in action. We must ask ourselves:

What am I willing to do to provide courage, sanctuary, and support to those who need it most? How can I stand in solidarity with the marginalized and resist the forces of oppression? How can I cultivate compassion and empathy in myself and in my community?

This is not a time for passivity or despair. It is a time to rise up, to embrace our shared humanity, and to build a more just and equitable world. Heed the call of the psalmist, not just for ourselves, but for all those who yearn for a future filled with hope and justice.

By embracing our shared humanity and taking action, we can transform this “Time For Courage” into a time of profound and lasting change.
