Don’t Despair

Gandhi’s words offer a profound anchor in times of despair: “Whenever I despair, I remember that the way of truth and love has always won. There may be tyrants and murderers, and for a time, they may seem invincible, but in the end, they always fail. Think of it: always.”

This timeless wisdom resonated with me recently when someone asked if I still harbored hope. My immediate response was a firm “Yes.” Though Gandhi’s quote wasn’t top of mind, its essence, along with another of his pivotal insights, came to me later. He was once challenged with the question: “Do you really believe you could use non-violence against someone like Hitler?” His unwavering reply: “Not without defeats, and great pain. But are there no defeats in war? No pain? What you cannot do is accept injustice. From Hitler, or anyone.”

We all navigate stretches where hope feels fragile, confronted by the harsh realities of trouble, pain, and cruelty. Yet, we are called to cultivate a hope that doesn’t deny these difficulties, but rather finds its strength and persistence within them.
