Without Payment

You received without payment, give without payment. — Matthew 10:8.

I’ve been incredibly fortunate throughout my life to be surrounded by wonderful friends who’ve showered me with countless gifts. And no, I’m not talking about that Porsche or Ford pickup I’m still waiting for! The true treasures I’ve received are the unconditional gifts of love, time, comfort, and unwavering support, given without any expectation or obligation. I’m especially thankful for the incredible forgiveness so many have extended, despite my many stumbles and follies along the way.

My personal “balance sheet” certainly feels lopsided, even with my best intentions to reciprocate all the generosity I’ve received. Though I doubt the divine keeps a meticulous ledger, I’ve noticed that as we mature, we tend to reflect on these accounts more often. Many of us find ourselves growing a little kinder, a little more forgiving, perhaps with a quiet “just in case” whispering in the back of our minds.

Our expressions of gratitude and generosity take many forms. We may not always be able to help with a big task like moving furniture, but we can certainly bring the beer. While marching in protest might not be feasible, we can wholeheartedly support friends who do and even help craft their signs. And if knocking on doors isn’t our forte, we can certainly write postcards to make our voices heard. It’s truly amazing how, no matter our limitations, there’s always a way for us to participate meaningfully in life’s grand tapestry.

“Give Without Payment” indeed, is a beautiful motto to live by.
