Every Bird In The Sky

I know every bird in the sky, and the creatures in the field are in my sight. – Psalm 50:11.

This verse, and others like it, often brings me back to what I believe to be a truth: the idea that God knows us intimately, deeply, and completely. When I was a boy, this omnipotence was a formidable, almost frightening concept. The thought that every secret thought, every hidden fear, every fleeting joy was laid bare before an unseen eye was overwhelming. You might wonder, if such an awareness exists, why doesn’t God intervene more obviously, more immediately, in the trials and tribulations of life? But then, who’s to say he/she doesn’t, in ways we can’t always perceive or comprehend in the moment?

This perspective shifted as I grew, especially when I looked back at the tapestry of my own life. Fifty-four years ago, I was a desperate and lonely law student, adrift in a sea of textbooks and anxieties, uncertain of my path forward. It was then, in that vulnerable space, that Suzy walked into my life. Her arrival was not only sudden and a whirlwind of revelation; but also, it was a quiet, steady presence that began to reorient my world.

Our life together has been, without a doubt, one hell of a ride. There have been moments of exhilarating joy, profound sorrow, disagreements, and certainly her unwavering support. We’ve navigated countless challenges, celebrated innumerable triumphs, and faced down fears hand-in-hand. Through it all, the constant has been the unspoken understanding that we were in it together. Looking back, I wouldn’t have wanted to travel this intricate, unpredictable journey with anyone else. It’s in the shared experiences, the quiet companionship, and the unwavering presence of someone who truly sees you, that I’ve often found a reflection of that larger divine knowing.

It’s a testament to how even in the vastness of an all-knowing universe, we can find meaning and connection in the deeply personal, shared journey of two souls.
