Stubborn Fool Am I

I am learning more about my relationship with God every day. Packing for a move will cause one to invoke his name a whole lot. — Webb Hubbell.

My words have a lot of truth to them, but not in the way you might expect. We often think we can do what we did twenty, thirty, or even fifty years ago, but then a demanding task like a move happens, and reality sets in. I’ve realized I have no business on a ladder, carrying heavy boxes of books, or trying to disconnect the television by myself.

What’s most striking is that age hasn’t diminished my stubbornness or my reluctance to accept help. This struggle is where my relationship with God comes into focus. No matter how many times God gently nudges me or tries to teach me a lesson, my first instinct is still to say, “I can do it myself.” I dig in my heels and refuse to ask for help.

Perhaps this is why God has helped me quietly and in spite of myself all along. He knows I am a stubborn person who waits until all things fail before finally approaching him/her in the quiet of the night for help. The realization of my own limitations and the grace of his/her assistance has been a humbling lesson.

Ultimately, this move has been less about the physical labor and more about a spiritual journey. It’s a powerful reminder that true strength isn’t found in my own ability to conquer every task, but in the humility to recognize my limits and the willingness to finally accept the help that has always been available. My relationship with God isn’t defined by my self-reliance; it’s defined by God’s steadfast presence, even when I’m too stubborn to see or feel it.
