Solid Foundation

Everyone then who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock. — Matthew 7:24.

I’m old enough to have experienced the floodwaters of life tear down the life I was living on several occassions. You live long enough and it will happen. For some, it happens more often than not. Each of our stories isn’t about if a storm will come, but when and how severe it will be.

Jesus’s message doesn’t promise a life free of storms; instead, it provides the blueprint for a life that can withstand them. The wise person and the foolish person in the parable both encounter the same rain, floods, and winds. The difference lies entirely in the foundation.

The “rock” in this parable is unequivocally the words of Jesus—specifically, his teaching and the entire ethos of the Kingdom of God that he preached, as found in the preceding chapters of Matthew (the Sermon on the Mount).

Reading today’s verse not only reminds me to build my house on the rock of faith, but to not just listen to his words, but to act on them.
