Before, you say what Suzy did, “Webb its Christmas season.” Think about all those packages under the tree as an Easter Egg hunt. Children rummage through the packages trying to identify which ones are for them much like they search for eggs on Easter morning. Every now and then I notice adults doing the same thing. God in some ways is like a giant Easter bunny or a Santa Claus leaving nuggets and presents throughout our life often in unexpected places. The smells of honeysuckle and pecan pie, the eye soothing views of fresh snow or a setting sun, and the sounds of a crashing wave or a baby’s laugh. He leaves us gifts everywhere, and sometimes we notice a gift where we least expect to find it.
I was reading a murder mystery Suzy recommended last week. One of the minor characters was talking to the chief inspector about money. The character Finney asks, “You know what money buys?” The inspector shakes his head no. Finney tells him he is an accountant and he’s spent a lifetime counting money and watching people who have it. He says he’s decided that the only thing money buys is – space. “A bigger house, a bigger car, a larger hotel room. First class plane tickets. But it doesn’t buy comfort. No one complains more than the rich and the entitled. Comfort, security, ease. None of that comes with money.”
I read this and realized I had been given a nugget, a gift in an unlikely place. The engineer in me knows that space is a vacuum, filled only with emptiness.
