The players, coaches, and fans of Kentucky and Baylor are celebrating. I can assure you that in the locker room the coaches reminded their players to savor the victory. Legend tells us that Zacchaeus, the legendary tax-collector who climbed a tree to see Jesus passing, remained in Jericho after Jesus’s death. Each morning he returned to the tree, watered it, and removed any weeds or vines that grew around it. He’d then look up into the tree where he sat that fateful day and a light of peace and contentment would come over him.
Zacchaeus knew the importance of keeping the spirit of that moment alive in his heart. During Lent we sometimes are so focused on our sacrifice and fast, we forget to savor the moments where we experience the presence of God. We must always remember that our focus should be on Christ’s sacrifice not our own, and how through it we are all victorious. During Lent we learn the importance of keeping the spirit of Easter alive in our heart year round.
