The expression he/she’s in a zone is well known in athletics. A basketball player suddenly can’t miss a shot. A golfer can’t miss a putt. A quarterback completes every pass he throws. A runner completes a race in record time and can’t explain why on this day he was able to excel. Yes, even a lumbering offensive tackle gets in a “zone.” He knocks his opponent over and over. Although his zone is usually less visible to fans.
We get in mental zones as well, sometimes calling it — being on a roll. We glide through the paperwork on our desk, dominate a meeting, or give a killer presentation. There are all kinds of mental zones. In school we ace a test when we shouldn’t. We are able to analyze a problem and see a solution clearly, or process a complexity and reduce it to simple terms.
We all had these moments, and most often we can’t explain how it happened. Sometimes it involves a combination of physical and mental skills, like a brain surgeon removing a tumor he knows is almost impossible. We don’t know what brings on a “zone” or what causes it to end. Yes hard work, training, and practice get us to that point, but being in a “zone” is still a unique experience one can only enjoy when it happens. Meditate for a moment on when the last time you were in a “zone.”
Yes, there is a spiritual zone as well. It comes at that moment that a divine spark is in you. You gain poise and strength to pass through any experience without fear that it may prove to be too hard. You are conscious of the presence of God within you, and you have no fear. Like a basketball player you want the ball, because you feel free from all that would hold you down.
Unlike, a physical or mental zone, there is a trigger mechanism for each of us to reach a spiritual zone. That mechanism is a conscious choice to be involved in the lives of other people we encounter on our way.
