Practice kindness all day to everybody and you will realize you’re already in heaven now. — Jack Kerouac.
The key to Kerouac’s quote is the word “practice.” Having played a lot of sports, I learned at an early age that the word “practice” was just that, and involved lots of failures. Dropped passes, missed free throws, strikeouts, hooks and slices, bad serves and poor backhands, the list can go on for days. Practicing kindness can have its mistakes as well. I bet you can think of times you were trying to be nice or kind and you stuck your foot in your mouth. But like the book, Tipping Point, describes: the more you practice, the better you get at whatever you are trying to accomplish.
Today is a good day to start practicing kindness. In the words of Tolstoy — “Nothing can make our life, or the lives of other people, more beautiful than perpetual kindness.”
