Over the past few days, I’ve rebuilt my computer with the help of my new best friend – Sandip Barman. One consequence of this process is I got out of my daily rhythm. I had to be at my desk talking over a speaker, as he reloaded and repaired software. My body sensed stress and the different routine, and it took me a day or two to come down. After my transplant, my doctor told me to listen to my body and learn to live with its limits. He said it would take time and attention, and he was right. I’m still learning, but I have discovered that listening to one’s body becomes a way to listen to God’s presence.
During Advent we prepare for God’s coming to earth and living in human form. Yet, rather than renewing our acquaintance with our own body’s needs and wisdom, we tend to tune it out. Unstoppable work, shopping, eating, drinking, stressing, and countless ways we avoid self-encounter dominates every waking moment and lots of our sleep. As we prepare for God appearing in the flesh, we ignore our own. Take a moment to reacquaint yourself with your body, your heart, and your soul. Pause to listen to what they tell you, and entrust yourself to their message.
