Charlotte has many great traditions. One is the Tosco Music Party. Started over twenty years ago by a man named John Tosco and his mother by simply having a few friends over to jam on a Saturday, it has now become a four time a year event where musicians come from around the country (and the world) to perform one or two songs. They all play for free and it now plays to an overfilling auditorium. Prices are cheap because the artists donate their music. You can hear classical violinists, opera, bluegrass, soul, pop, and everything in between on any given evening. Last Saturday we heard for example a Russian Jazz singer, high school violinists, a barber shop quartet, the pianist for Jon Fogerty, and Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs, to name only a few. In addition to listening the audience comes every so often to their feet to sing along with the Tosco singers in songs like “Proud Mary.” So I brought the program home and thought I might share a lyric or two.
Left a good job in the city, Workin’ for the man every night and day. And I never lost a minute of sleepin’, Worryin’ bout the ways things might have been.
If you come down to the river, Bet you gonna find some people who live, You don’t have to worry ‘cause you have no money, People on the river are happy to give.
The lyrics remind us all of the basics of our life as disciples. Never “worryin’ bout ways might have been’, and finding and being people who live and are happy to give. On this day of beginnings sing along.
