Recently I gave some thought to our 24 hour news cycle, and how we view our leaders and heroes. Now I am one who rarely allows myself to generalize without a massive amount of evidence to support my view, but on this thought I find myself unable to avoid my own admonition about generalization.
We tend, fed by the media, to relish in the foibles of our most successful, not on their good deeds. We expect more than simple humanity. We expect even if their actions are good; to be motivated for a bad reason.
During Lent we should focus not just on a cynical view of the individual’s motivation. Let us focus on the good done by the individual; not their flaws in character or an egotistical motivation. Let’s meditate on whether the deeds radiate character. Do the deeds and, more importantly, do their actions embrace decency and an unfailing sensitivity of soul.
If we do we will tune out the 24 hour news cycle, and turn on the music of God.
