The chief pang of most trials is not so much the actual suffering itself, as our own resistance to it. – Jean Nicolas Grou.
An often heard phrase in the Hubbell household was and still is – “Patience is a virtue.” Often the listener to this age-old wisdom didn’t feel very virtuous at the moment, just the opposite. When we lose our patience we lose command of ourselves, but when we submit, our soul resides in peace. When we are impatient we desire what we cannot have, or not desire what we have. In those external things that “try our patience” peace never dwells. Peace only resides in a quiet soul, and it can even bear the intolerable by remaining firm and patient.
In your patience possess ye your souls. – Luke 21:19
