When I was a young boy my favorite cookie was what my grandmother called “fruit cookies” – essentially fruit cake in cookie form. When I could get away with raiding the cookie tin, I used to store my cookie stash in my jacket, climb a tree, nibble on the cookies, and pretend they gave me super human strength. I spent many an hour in that tree eating cookies and letting my imagination run wild about the “super powers” I derived from those special cookies.
Now, Suzy and my doctors frown on my love of cookies, and my knees no longer allow me to climb a tree, so I am content with a quiet moment in the morning for prayer, meditation, and conversation with God. It is impossible to continue our discipleship without taking time for fellowship with God. Those moments refresh, restore, and renew the temper of our minds, at all times, under all trials, after all conflicts with the world. It is in those moments when we are in contact with the world unseen that gives us continual access to strength. As how our day begins, so is our strength.
Without this healing and refreshing of the spirit, duties grow to be burdens, the events of life chafe our temper, employments lower the tone of our minds, and we become fretful, irritable, and impatient. So as I often implore you all — take that quiet moment. You will find it is a fountain of strength and better for you than a cookie. (For me, that’s saying a lot. )
