Family of God

Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named. – Ephesians 3:15

 

So much is made about differences – Men and women; black, white, brown and yellow; gay and straight, Christian and Jew, Sunni and Shiite, Buddhist and Hindu, Republican and Democrat, Conservative and Liberal, Have and Have-not, the list goes on and on, and always somebody is trying to pit one group against another, to claim one group’s superiority, or even in too many instances that one group should not exist.

I have troubles with labels to begin with, but to put down one group or another because they are different or don’t agree with one’s beliefs is the injustice we are each called to fight against every day of our life. We are all unique individuals and the only thing we all share is that we are “children of God”, and with God there are no favorite sons or daughters. Every man, every woman on this planet is part of the family of God.

Let us learn that if any brother or sister of God is lonely that is one too many, that no brother or sister is “less perfect” in the eyes of God, and that no one should be loved less than another. On this Thanksgiving eve as we travel to be with family,  may we give thanks  for our commonality with all members of the human race and welcome to our table all of our brothers and sisters.
