Delight thyself also in the Lord; and He shall give thee the desires of thine heart. – Psalms 37:4
One of our family traditions is making Christmas wish lists. My children have become very creative in theirs. All acknowledge we don’t need anything; we are all fortunate, so it’s simply fun to read requests for World Peace, beach houses, and successful new careers to name a few.
Like Christmas lists, from time to time, we also petition God for something or someone. The psalmist words are comforting in that regard. So are the words of Martin Luther that follow:
All who call on God in true faith, earnestly from the heart, will certainly be heard, and will receive what they asked and desired, although not in the hour and the measure, or the very thing which they ask; yet they will obtain something greater and more glorious than they have dared to ask.
Tomorrow we celebrate the feast of St. Nicholas. Rather than getting caught up in the spider’s web of commercial temptation, may you take a moment to ask God to fill you with the generosity of spirit that St. Nicholas embodies.
