This weekend I got several e-mails asking how in the world could anybody play football in the weather that was Green Bay’s. Their questions reminded me of the following poem:
Where our Captain bid us go.
T’is not ours to murmur, “No,”
He that gives the sword and shield,
Chooses too the battle-field
On which we are to fight the foe. – Anon.
Often it is circumstances that dictate the where and when our life’s battles must be waged. We can’t all have the opportunity to recover from an illness on the beaches of Bali, preach to the choir, or swim in smooth waters. We are called to sanctify our present lot, not to be put to the test only in ideal conditions. No matter how dark our present circumstances it is our call to brighten and improve them with light, faith, trust, courage, and faith. As participants in God’s game plan it is not for us to choose the field (even if it is frozen solid); it is for us to line up at our position, play the game of life with all our heart and soul, and to make that field one of glory and honor.
