Inaction

If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them. – John 13:17

Followers of the Pew know I write a lot about action. If one see injustice – step in; if one sees hunger – feed; etc. I also write a lot about how our actions can be harmful, thoughtless words can cut deeper than a knife – thoughtless slights – destroy, etc. But today we meditate on the opposite side of the equation. We often act unjustly when we don’t do a thing. Every duty we omit to do, obscures some truth we should have known.

When I look back on my many years, I find myself regretting inaction in the presence of injustice more than something I consciously did. How about you? I spend this morning’s meditation talking to God about those times I stood in the shadows while others were cruel, hurtful, and inflicted emotional pain. I ask him to give me the strength to see my duty and act. I know when I have acted, when I have stepped in, a truth was revealed to me and my neighbors.
