Leave God to order all thy ways,
And hope in him, whate’er betide;
Thou’lt find him in the evil days
The all-sufficient strength and guide;
Who trusts in God’s unchanging love,
Builds on the rock than nought can move. – G. Neumark
Most of the Pew readers won’t remember the Prudential commercials – the image of the rock of Gibraltar standing up to storms of the surrounding sea. You may remember the Chevy commercials with Bob Segar singing in the background “Like a Rock.”
We all try in times of trouble to stand tall and firm – “like a rock” – an immovable force standing up to the storms of life. Yet we know that even the Rock of Gibraltar has been shaped and moved by wind and rain. No matter how strong we try to be, we are all shaped by the storms in our life perhaps more so than by the good days. There is only one immovable object in this universe – the will of God. That’s why we learn to attach our will to his during difficult times. We find in his good pleasure an inexhaustible source of peace, strength, and consolation.
