Take This Cup

Oh my father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as Thou wilt. – Matthew. 26:39

I look on the above passage as one of the great lessons Christ teaches. It is in our nature to argue with God — to think we know better what is best for us and others. Christ’s humanity cries out to let the cup of torture and death pass from him, but then immediately resigns his will to God and God’s plan for him and humanity. Perhaps he is teaching us that it is okay to implore God to change our circumstances and our outcome, but at some point resignation brings a settled quiet of mind and spirit. When we do so, we learn the famous adage – there are no disappointments to those whose wills are buried in the will of God.
