Speak, Lord; for thy servant heareth. 1 Samuel 3:9
My wife has always owned several versions of the three monkeys who represent see no evil, hear no evil, and speak no evil. I read recently about a devotion that has caused me to look at her figurines differently. In the Mussulmen devotions, one constant gesture is to put the hands to the ears, as if to listen for the messages from the other world. Perhaps the three monkeys are covering their eyes, mouth, and ears to shut out the outside world and its stir, confusion, and temptations. Then again maybe not.
However it is not a bad idea to meditate in silence, with one’s eyes closed, and speaking no words so we might hear, see, and feel the will of God.
