Prayers For Peace

This Lent, I am using up a lot of my prayer time on peace in the Ukraine and the people of the Ukraine and Russia. I don’t understand the “Why.” Then again history records a lot of wars where the “why” is lost. It would be funny if war wasn’t so horrible, to listen to an explanation for many wars. For example, is Russia really worried that the Ukraine is going to invade Russia and they are only defending themselves? Give me a break. Is war really worth individual egos or false national pride?

Is war worth our Lenten time of personal introspection and getting closer to God? Perhaps part of that introspection should be why human history is so replete with war. What is it in human nature that drives us to bomb children, destroy cathedrals and hospitals, and commit atrocities against our neighbors. When I talk to God about my questions, I do learn a lot about myself.

Yes, Lent is a time for sacrifice, service, and study, but save a little time for a prayer or two for peace. I worry that it might take God’s intervention to resolve this one.
